Systematization of workshop development and delivery for social impact
Client: El Buen Socio (The Good Partner), a social organization that provides ethical financial services and training, aiming to promote productive projects with social or environmental impact in rural areas of Mexico
Timeframe: 3 months
Role: Project Manager, Strategy Designer
Team: Isis Linares - UX Researcher
Challenge: Like most organizations, the pandemic posed a digitalization challenge. Seeking to expand their impact, they committed to offer virtual trainings. Our goal was to design a replicable and flexible process for the development and delivery of training, while creating the fundamental tools to carry it out.
Methodologies: Design Thinking, qualitative and desk research, service blueprint.
First, the research phase.
Not always do we get friendly and eager clients, but this was a beautiful collaboration. Our journey with El Buen Socio began with a comprehensive understanding phase. First, reviewing their current work and challenges where a blueprint session came in really handy to understand their back-end pains and improvement opportunities. Later, interviews with leadership, experienced rural trainers, and of course, the target population in rural areas (which was a logistical challenge). An honest impression: we were mesmerized by the human quality of both administration staff and trainers, which made this a truly fulfilling project.
In parallel, we ran a desk research on the population’s context and a benchmark exercise on rural learning techniques such as the ”From Farmer to Farmer" Training Methodology, which set the stage for an empathetic approach.
Gathering all this data, we moved to the synthesizing process. Here we identified, for example, that one of their most relevant barriers was that their beautifully designed program materials were developed in Adobe Suite so, since they are not designers, they weren’t able to update them! Another key discovery was that they are great at implementing in-person programs, but didn’t have the skills, knowledge, or tools to prepare an engaging digital training.
Desktop Research plan:
Organization's documentary review
Best practices on financial education practices, rural teaching, and virtual facilitation.
Benchmark of techniques and technologies for training development and delivery.
Field research plan:
SWOT and Service Blueprint workshop
Interviews with collaborators
Interviews with small producers: People, Relationships-Exchange, Context
A facilitator's qualities, skills, growth path and barriers, workshop.
Shadowing in current workshops
Now we were ready for one of those 6-hour co-creative sessions with a “let me catch my breath” kind of coffee break. There, we focused on laying out the insights of our research to deepen our understanding with their expertise. Then, we performed a prioritization activity to identify the most impactful improvements and decided together the format and content of the deliverables to ensure they would be easily embedded in their day-to-day operations.
For example, we concluded that Excel is a practical platform for them to follow the progress, fill in information, and share it. However, on-site facilitators rarely have internet access, therefore a physical cheat-sheet to take with them was the most useful.
The design phase.
Together, we set the goal of developing 6 artifacts that would enhance their capabilities to systematically develop and deliver current and new training programs and courses. Both in person and digital.
In search of an easier and more engaging way of communicating the design journey and the use of the different tools we developed for them, we chose a methafore: Baking trainings. From ideating and determining the content to preparing for the delivery and the later follow-up.
